August 2016 Favorites
Now that August is over and it’s September (where did last month go?!), I thought it would be the perfect time to do a round up of all my August favorites.
I have a winding relationship with music. Think of those long roads that dip and dive. Not sure where I was going with that analogy but anyways, MUSIC. I used to listen to it all the time. Now. . .let’s just say that time is the greatest thief. I have no more time. Life has gotten super busy. So the only time I have to listen to music is on my commute (if I’m not editing photos or reading a book). For my August Favorites, I’ve been really digging Zebra Katz. I think I found him through a random Spotify playlist. He’s super funky and I can imagine myself in a Brooklyn warehouse, music thumping, lights flashing and anytime Tear The House Up comes on, my butt immediately starts grooving. Definitely worth a listen.
*NOTE OH now I remember where I first heard him. It was when I was at the gym, listening to music for cardio and his song Imma Read played. I played that song about 4 times in a row. This here is an interesting interview with him.
What luck. I barely go to the movies. I’m trying to make it a weekly (pshh, let’s be real, monthly) thing with my friends. For this month’s August Favorites, we went to see The Lobster. Have you ever gone to a movie not knowing anything about it? Yes, that’s what I did with this movie and I was so totally confused. I don’t know how much to say without ruining it (but if you’ve seen it and want to discuss in the comments, please do!) but it’s set in an alternate universe and there’s a lot of social commentary about relationships/being single. If you’ve watched it, let’s discuss!
NYC has been hot as balls lately. I’ve run out of floaty dresses to wear and have relied on shorts and tees. This Zara-esque top from sammydress has been a lifesaver and goes on my August Favorites list. It goes well well with jeans, shorts or skirts and I love how easy it is on the arms. The cinched arm-piece had me worried at first; I don’t like clothes that are annoying to wear, but once you put it on, you barely notice it. It’s light so you get a lot of air flow (a godsend during these humid NYC days). And best of all, it’s only $12.15!
I’ve been keeping it light with the makeup since, well, I’m not a fan of a heavily made up face. That said, I have been using my Nars Velvet Matte Skin Tint a lot lately and that is why it belongs in my August Favorites. When I first bought it, I wasn’t a fan until I read a blog post that recommended using it with a Beauty Blender pouf. After that? I was sold. In the morning, I put a dollop of Nars foundation on my hand, wet the Beauty Blender and pat it all over my face. My super oily skin loves it and it gives me flawless coverage. A new favorite.
Well, this one is an obvious choice, but Stranger Things! My boyfriend and I watched the whole thing in ONE DAY. We watched the first episode on a Saturday morning at 10 am, while making breakfast and finished it at around 11pm that same night. We. . .kind of sound like losers, but I was hooked. It reminded me so much of The Goonies and E.T., basically a blast from the past and I loved it. That said, we also watched it the weekend it came out, before all the hype, so we were able to watch it without any of the prejudice. My friend Lauren watched it a couple of weeks after it came out, after all the hype, and thought it didn’t live up to it.
I first heard about this book from The Skinny Confidential and bought a used copy off of Amazon. It took a few weeks for me to get through the first 6-8 chapters but things picked up after that and I read the rest of the book in about 3 days. It got that good. I definitely want to see this in a movie/mini-series version. I even got my boyfriend to read it and he’s also a fan so far. It’s nice to be able to discuss books you love with people you love.
ALSO, talking about books, I just joined the Book of The Month club and I’m super excited to get my first book this month. They’re having a great promotion right now, $5 for your first month with the code READ5, so I had to jump on it. I’ll have a review for you guys soon!
I have many things on my wishlist but number one are these gorgeous pink suede mules from Front Row Shop. I think these shoes are the perfect transition from summer to fall. Not to mention, it’s the Pantone color of the year! I would pair these with mom jeans, shorts, culottes, everything. The color is fantastic, and so is the price point!
Front Row Shop has become a fast favorite because they have such funky unique items on their site at an affordable price. They also have this great loyalty shopping program where you get points for any purchase you make. It’s completely free to sign up and you immediately get $10 shopping points to spend. They’re currently running a special and if you use this link, you get $15 to spend. Not a bad deal and they have great customer service as well.
